Beverage Bureaucracy

pepsiThis is one of those situations where I just want to scream, “It shouldn’t be this difficult folks!”

The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has decided to keep their contract with Pepsi, thus keeping their soda machines in school hallways until the school board has ‘reviewed healthier options’.  Of course the negative side of me immediately goes to the thought that instead of having corn syrup and sugar laden drinks they’ll go for aspartame.

I really don’t understand what has to be “reviewed”, instead of pop we want water and fruit juices, no?

So isnt’t it extremely convenient then that Pepsi sells these products as well!  They own Tropicana and Aquafina, in addition to licensing Dole. Seems like this shouldn’t be a big issue, in fact it can go kind of like this.

“Hey Pepsi, how’s it going? I’m doing fine. Look, I have something to discuss… see the parents are really getting on my ass about all that sugar and high-fructose corn syrup in your beverages… I know, I know we do have a great relationship.  That’s why instead of cutting you out why don’t you just send up your fine bottled water beverage and Tropicana juices?  What’s that?  You even have a line of juice that doesn’t need refrigeration providing us with the shipping convenience of soda?  That’s fantastic, I think we have a deal here.”

Ok so I’m being a little facetious but the ‘we need to talk it out’ response is pure bureaucratic bullshit.  I’m sure Pepsi would not mind switching products in order to keep your business, and if they are going to be asses you go talk to Coke, who owns Dasani, Minute Maid, Fruitopia and Fuze; they’ll be more than happy to take business away from Pepsi.

Students and their parents deserve better than this.
