Edit: What this post is NOT about: Christianity, religion itself, or atheism. It is certainly not about “bashing” Christianity. If you read this post and come to that conclusion you are both A) not really reading the post and B) looking for some kind of fight.
Seriously.
I adore PostSecret, you can get and amazing snapshot of both thoughtful insights of compassion and this…

someone who is so self obsessed they can’t bother to take anytime to actually understand what is going on in the world.
I’m just trying to understand how this works for her (presumably, but at about 99.99%), is the world-wide economy crisis perpetuated by the “non-believers”? Is there no real recession/depression going on in the world, just those religion renouncers getting fired “by God”. Or is it that she is just so self-centered it boils down to this idea that her private life is just soooo important that God is punishing the entire world because her husband renounced “his religion”.
Unfortunately any of these possible solutions can only be met with: Really? Really! Are you that self-centered? Really? Your grasp on reality is slipping.
The language is interesting too. Presumably if the man had stated “I’m going to be an athiest now,” the language would have been a little more serious, something like renouncing God himself or even denouncing him. “Renounced his religion”, sounds more like “You know, Catholocism just isn’t working for me.” Somehow I would doubt that God would get that vengeful for just not showing up to church on Sunday mornings.
I predict the only connection this poor man is going to make is that his wife can’t be bothered to respect his decisions and would rather place crap on “God” rather than contemplating human responsibility.

this is poorly written.
the most simple insight would be that he lost his house because of the fact that he lost his job
and that he lost his wife because he renounced religion (she obviously cares a lot about it)
not that she is claiming god is punishing the nation because her husband renounced him.
im all for atheism, but think before you write.
Oh please, you are both grasping at straws (or totally misunderstanding either the postcard or article). She is obviously connecting the fact that him renouncing his religion has caused him to loose his job, which is then causing them difficulty in keeping their house and marriage hence “the connection.”
I am certainly not claiming that she thinks god is punishing the nation for her husband’s transgression BUT that she seems to lack the capacity to realize the whole world is in an economic crisis and that her husband’s job loss has nothing to do with his faith. In other words she’s all “me,me,me” instead of “Hey you know what lots of people are losing their jobs right now, it’s the sucky economy, not an act of divine retribution.”
Also this is not about “atheism”, it is about blame. This woman is trying to put their troubles on her husband. Him loosing his job and them possibly loosing their house is a very common meme in this day and age and I’m guessing it’s pretty largely out of his or her control. Obviously she can’t handle that and wants to be able to say, when it all falls apart, that it was HIS fault because HE turned HIS back on god.
wow seriously? When did religious intolerance become trendy again? There’s a difference between atheism, and being a douche bag. You’re the kind of scum that give atheists a bad name. You’re like one of those fire and brimstone Christians, except from the other side. How about you grow up and get a life instead of criticizing others for theirs. Yes I do see the hypocrisy there
Quick, what is the quickest way to remove the connection between your eyes, brain, and hands? The answer… apparently you just have to become a blog commenter.

And now I have to go edit the post with that. *sigh*
Interestingly I am also going to have to start telling a lot more people, many of whom consider themselves religious, that they are actually atheist; because apparently the new definition of atheist is “anyone who ever disagrees with another individual who happens to have a religion.”
Why do atheists get so bent when someone of the Christian faith professes it or it manifests itself through their words and actions? Don’t you atheists understand that you, too, are a believer. Your belief that no God exists is a belief set– a faith, as strong (I believe- stronger) than that of any faithful Christian.
A true atheist, in my opinion, would not care enough to take the time to even post a defense against their belief (in no God) unless they, too, consider their beliefs as a “faith”.
Christians have faith in God. Atheists have faith in no God. Both have faith.
Thanks for playing “BillE”! Do you fall under category A or B? I’m betting a little bit of “not reading” and a whole lot of “looking for a fight.”
At this point I don’t know which is funnier the fact that they think calling me an atheist (a la “you atheists”) is the worst insult they can come up with, or the fact that I’m not even an atheist, or that ONCE AGAIN this post has nothing to do with atheism.
