Taking Out the Recycling

Toronto City Hall seems very interested in garbage lately, too bad it has nothing to do with cleaning up their own crap.

I apologize for the cheesy blow. *ahem*

First there was the report of the new fines for people who do not recycle starting in 2009.  The city plans to slap anyone caught “not recycling” with $105 fine.  Honestly my first thought is: Why $105?  Does $100 just not seem serious enough?  Did the drafters of this little fine think that $110 was excessive?

On the more serious note one has to wonder how this is enforceable? Even if you throw out all those living in apartments or condos.  Personally I think this is more of a punishment for the people who have hectic family and the recycling bin is forgotten in the garage or at the side of the house in the daily rush once in a while.  Then you have to deal with people who go on the occasional vacation and people like people like my partner and I who really don’t necessarily generate that much recycling; for paper we could deal with a bi-monthly pick-up, seriously we get like no mail.

Now apparently they are also considering a fine for people who don’t sort their recycling properly, garbage in the recycling bin and vice versa.  This is a horrendous idea from somebody who apparently lives in a gated community.  This is Toronto, every day you have people you have never seen before in your life walking in front of your home, and sadly many of them don’t mind throwing trash pretty much anywhere including your recycling bin.  Trust me, I know, I had to give up using my recycling box out on the street because if it was left outside for more than twenty minutes it would be filled with trash and I really hope that it was a dog and not a person that took a leak on it.  We use bags now.

I don’t see how these new attempts are really going to help out when a good portion of those fined will not be those who are “maliciously” not recycling.
