Maybe Mothers Aren’t Hags

I found a great little blurb on USA Today about the rise of c-sections.  Why is it so great?  It’s the first one I’ve come across that doesn’t try to blame mothers for the increases.

Ah yes the “Too Posh To Push” movement, constructed together by looking at a few celebrities a la Britney Spears who elect to have c-sections and conclude that this must be the reason why cesarean sections are on the rise.

Oh sure, they eventually get to the point where they mention that doctors are exceptionally “pro-active” due to concerns about lawsuits but that’s not the doctors fault, just trigger happy lawyers.

Thankfully this article cuts through a lot of the crap.

“I don’t like to admit it, but there are economic incentives” for doctors and hospitals to use the procedures, says Laube, who reviewed the new report before its release.

For example, some doctors might get bonuses for performing more labor inductions, which adds costs and increases the risk of C-sections, which, in turn, increase hospital profits because they require longer stays.

Yes money, it all comes down to money. The more complicated the solution, the more money that drops into the hospital’s pocket, even if it is not really in the best interest of mother and child.
