Applegate Gives Open Breast Cancer Response
As someone who is a fundraiser for breast cancer research I am consistently an ear for women who have gone through the experiences of breast cancer treatment and family members affected. Chemo and radiation can steal your hair but those with the largest emotional scars are those left with the scars of a mastectomy.
For that reason I was a little concerned when news broke that Christina Applegate was undergoing a double mastectomy, not only for her health and well-being but the comments that the media on her behalf. The most consistent quote I heard was of Applegate joking that she was going to have the best breasts in the rest home. Even with breast re-construction surgery the loss can still be devastating. It’s painful, invasive, and ugly scarring can occur. If using artificial implants they must also be maintained, silicone or saline implants should be replaced every ten years. They can feel alien
I thought is was great that she was able to find the humour; humour keeps us sane. But without a commentary of her feelings it seemed that not only were her expectations out of line with reality but also that it portrayed a mastectomy as something almost flip.
So I was very glad to here about her interview with Oprah. I didn’t get to see it but her comments seemed very open honest and really expressed the many emotions that many women experience when they have a breast removed.
She stated that scheduled a nude photo shot to remember her breasts. I think this is a fantastic way for women to get in touch with their bodies.
I wish her the speediest of recoveries.
