Painful Memories…From 248 Years Ago?
Oh dear. You know what is really hurting the Quebeçois nationalist cause. Their damn flair for the dramatic. Such as their complaints over Paul McCartney playing a concert for the 400th anniversary of Quebec City.
They claim his presence evokes painful memories of Britain’s conquest of New France in 1760.
I couldn’t believe this was actually said when I heard it on CP24 earlier today.
I’m pretty sure you have to be alive in order to record a memory and since I’m pretty sure there aren’t any double centenarians walking around Quebec, there aren’t to many people who recall the conquest of New France.
Again it was 248 years ago, I’m not saying that absolves all wrongdoing, but you can’t do anything about it. What you have here is history, and holding grudges over history your great-grandmother can’t even remember is ridiculous. Snubbing McCartney is not going to show a bunch of Brits who have been dead for two centuries whose boss, it just makes you look like a jackass.
Funnily enough people were commenting on a few blogs that McCartney as a name, is in fact Irish, so the McCartney family might not have even been in Britain at the time the British were attacking New France. But you know, it’s guilt by association.
