Bus Lanes, Now?

The Background

So I’ve been dragging my ass to the York University Campus for three years now. Everyday on the subway to Downsview and then getting on the “express” bus for the final leg. Depending on the traffic it can take up to one hour out of my day for either direction.  The worst of course is during the rush hour, when the buses, completely packed, barely crawl along the main streets.

The Controversial(?) Government Plan

So, in theory the plan to extend the Spadina subway line to York University is now underway.  I’ll let you know in fifteen years whether it all pans out or not.  Right now there is quite a large and vocal chunk complaining about the new extension to “nowhere”.  Personally for me a lot of the subway is to “nowhere”.  Kipling, Scarborough RT?  Useless.  Needless to say people’s perceptions are dictated by their own habits.  Personally I have seen excessive growth around the Downsview area and the university within recent years.  Shopping centres, condos and new subdivisions; the area is primed for a lot of growth, and it still has the room to do so.  So we’ll see how the whole thing goes, even though it’s not going to help me out one darn bit.

So… What the Hell?

After the announcement that the money was finally coming through it was mentioned that they will be putting in bus only lanes. Wait… what?  Now that we are going to be putting in a subway… we’ve decided to put in transit only lanes?  In what world does that make sense.  Let’s waste money creating new lanes that will be obsolete as soon as we get the subway done.  If we had decided to do this ten years ago, sure, but now?  Why don’t we concentrate on putting in transit lanes in the areas that won’t benefit from a rail system?  You’ve already made the poor students and professors suffer for at least ten years, what’s another five?
