Shower Curtains; and other Reasons Why We’re Doomed
So over the past few days there have been some breaking stories on the dangers of vinyl shower curtains. Basically they have discovered that the phthalates chemicals the PVC is made with, which have been linked with birth defects, liver abnormalities and tumours; are conveniently released into the air in that “new plastics” smell of a freshly opened curtain package.
Of course my main question is “Why couldn’t they have told me this two weeks ago when I bought a new shower curtain?” Honestly it’s a good think I don’t have kids around or I would probably be freaking.
So I started looking around trying to find alternatives to the PVC curtains and most were not so helpful. The number one recommendation I came across was put in a glass door. Ah yes real practical advice. How about something for those of us who happen to be renters? I digress.
While searching around I found this commenter on a site, stating that basically anything with these new plastic smells will leech these chemicals into the air and into anything it holds. Now I can’t vouch for the authenticity or truth of the comment but it’s something scary to think about, especially after we’ve just gone through this issue of bisphenol-a leeching into baby bottles.
It’s just one of those things where you feel kind of screwed not matter what. You don’t want to be ignorant but you can’t spend you entire life worrying over every little thing that could possibly cause some harm. So what do you do?
