Sexism Exists? How Dare You

So I finally got around to watching the video by Women’s Media Center about all the sexist comments and remarks made about Hillary Clinton. It was actually prompted by C. who started asking questions when he saw an article on the topic in the Metro. I love him dearly but he never keeps up with the news.

Of course I viewed it at YouTube, and the comments on that poor forsaken site, well I would just avert my eyes if I were you. It never ceases to amaze how people think it’s so funny to shout out (type out?) misogynist comments to anything that says that sexism is wrong and should be stopped. I won’t quote any specific comments, because quite honestly that level of stupid makes my cursor cry. I do, however, want to talk about some of the ridiculous ideas that some people have. So without further ado here are some of the general ideas I see being posted about this video.

1. Women want too much. They say they want equality but what they really want is respect.

If you can wrap your head around it and say this makes sense you really need to seek some professional help. You would need to assume two things a) that men don’t get respect and b) everyone is a rude little twit. Showing respect is showing humanity and it should be afforded to everybody. Unless of course they do something that shows that they should loose your respect; like writing asshole comments about women not deserving respect.

2. The Women’s Media Center is complaining about sexism against women but not against the sexism against men. That’s just sexist!

I know, I mean, what is with these special interest groups discussing things related to the interests they serve? It is just like the Canadian Cancer Society. I mean, here they are raising awareness and money for cancer, completely ignoring diabetes. The Cancer Society is just … disease-ist.

See how fucking stupid that sounds? WMC is a special interest group, looking at women in media is what they do and what they represent. Complaining that they aren’t dealing with men in media is exactly like complaining that a group raising awareness about cancer isn’t doing the same for diabetes, or AIDS, or any other disease you can throw in there. The WMC is not making other any statement besides the fact that Clinton is facing sexist comments in the media. These comments are wrong, end of statement. Complaining about sexism against males, in this situation, is just trying to hijack the issue.

3. So what? Clinton faced sexism, Barack Obama faced racism.

No doubt. But what’s your point? WMC never claimed that he didn’t nor did they state that Clinton lost solely because of sexism. Again, she faced sexist comments in the media and that is wrong.

There is, without a doubt, a problem of racism still existing in the world today. But recognizing that sexism is also prevalent in this world doesn’t mean we are negating the existence of racism.

Both Clinton and Obama probably lost votes due to sexism and racism; in addition they both probably gained votes due to their race or sex. Unfortunately this is the nature of voting, people can vote for any reason they want, even if it is unsound.

Personally I do believe that the right person won the Democratic Primary. If I had voting power within the United States I would have voted for Obama. He also faced some cheap shots from the media. Once again though just because we recognize a wrong in one area of the world that doesn’t mean we don’t know there are other injustices.
