“Bus Rage”
Update 08/04/08:
I’ve noticed quite a few more people have been finding this page over the recent events of a young man being stabbed to death on a Greyhound bus. More info here.
Original:
I don’t know if you have seen these ads by Greyhound busing services but quite frankly they tick me off. At this point I wish I had thought to take a picture to show you but I’m just going to have to describe it.
They’re just regular poster ads, generally placed in areas of heavy commuter traffic with a big ugly bus on them saying something along the lines of “There’s A Reason You’ve Never Heard of Bus Rage.” Well dear Greyhound let me assure you that it’s only because no one has coined the phrase yet.
Allow me.
Ahem.
Bus Rage - [buhs] [reyj] *
- noun.
Intense anger, often accompanied by urges to act violently towards objects and people, brought on by the problems that can occur while trying to travel by large passenger motor vehicles.
Instances of bus rage can be brought on by any but not limited to any of the following.
1. Busing companies overselling the seats available on the bus.
2. Buses consistently not being on time.
3. Changing schedules without notifying passengers.
4. Changing pick up locations without notifying passengers.
5. Displaying the wrong information on schedule boards.
6. Directly passengers to the wrong bus.
7. Refusal to increase the number of scheduled buses during heavy travel holiday time.
8. Informing a bus load of passengers that they on the wrong bus, getting all the passengers off the bus and then realizing that they have made the mistake, but really, why bother apologizing.
Sadly everything except that last one happens on a regular basis with Greyhound. Actually as fairly regular user I can say I have never had any experience with them where there wasn’t least two problems off of the above list.
The service at the Toronto Coach Terminal is so consistently horrible I actually kind of miss the security check at Pearson Airport.
Don’t even get me started on the other passengers. The next time someone lowers their seat onto my knees the only question will be whether they can avoid my fists long enough until the stroke starts affecting my motor skills.
