Boy Crushed
A nine year old boy in Quebec was suffocated to death when he was completely wrapped within a weighted blanket which was nearly 40 pounds, and then left alone without any supervision for twenty minutes.
Why was he wrapped in such a heavy blanket? Well he’s autistic and it’s “therapy”.
So apparently we have discovered that we should not leave children underneath extremely heavy objects. I mean who knew? How about anyone with a shred of common sense? Is common sense too hard to find these days?
This “therapeutic” weighted blanket was only eleven pounds lighter than the child himself and he was completely encased in it from head to toe. It’s kind of like the discovery that lawn darts aren’t exactly the safest toys in the world all over again. I just don’t get it, how could this ever been considered acceptable?
Even if the poor boy had not passed away I would have found it extremely disturbing. It is one thing to tell a child to stand in the corner or confine them to their room, it is quite another to wrap a child in their own little tomb, even if it does have a fuzzy cover.
What if the school had a bunch of little cages to lock the autistic children up in when they were misbehaving, you know with just enough room to sit down in, to help them with their “fits”? I wonder how the public would react to that.
Well that answer is simple, the public would be the one in fits. Parents would be disgusted by the recommendation to put their child in a cage. It would be a total PR disaster. What we need is some marketing thought here. Cages are cold and harsh and we need them to seem warm and fuzzy. I know…blankets! It’s very easy to imprison children if the bars are fuzzy.
It’s just disturbingly sad.
