Doors Open Toronto

So Doors Open Toronto will be happening next weekend, otherwise known as Saturday May 24th and Sunday May 25th.

For those that don’t know Doors Open Toronto is basically a yearly cultural event where different historically significant/architecturally interesting buildings open their doors to the public for free.

This year there is a concentration on religious spaces so there are many houses of religious worship on the list, from the Church of Holy Trinity one of the oldest in Toronto to BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir , just under a year old.

On the strictly architectural side we have… well a whole lot of modern, from Mies van der Rohe’s symbol of corporate oppression to the building for the Ontario Association of Architects. Of course we also have some examples from the slightly older set such as the Canada Life building and Gooderham Flatiron Building.

There will be the Ontario Legislative Building, Old City Hall, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and many other popular Toronto landmarks.

For just plain oddities there the Lower Bay Station and the Distillery District’s malt kilns.

So if you’re in Toronto, next weekend it’s a good time to pretend to be cultured and hit up a couple of spots for a tour
