Daily Mail Cracks Me Up
Every once and a while I love to take a little trip to www.dailymail.co.uk. It’s like reading the titles of the real rag mags in the drug store check out and I love the drug store.
Anyways there’s a little article about about a plus-size beauty queen who is going to be a contestant for Miss England. The gist is “Miss Surrey” is single-handedly going to turn our young girls into obese pigs.
I’ll be quite honest, the girl is chubby, and she might want to re-think this bikini, but she’s not obese.
There is a very large problem with body image these days, not to mention body size. But if you stop and call out every person who is slightly outside the idealized notion of health, on either side of the weight issue, and tell them that they are going to die; well, you just aren’t solving anything.
What really bugs me however is when people like this ‘nutrionist’ in the article, purposely distort the issue so that they can preen on about how good they are.
She is an ambassador not for the beautiful larger lady as she’d have us believe but a poster girl for diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, cancers and all the other devastating and potentially fatal health problems that are caused or exacerbated by obesity.
I personally don’t think I’ve ever heard such hogwash before. If you honestly believe that this girl is ‘that’ fat I have some numbers for you.
In her article Grenfell states that
At 5ft 10in, Chloe should have a body mass index, or BMI, (indicating her levels of fat) of 20. Hers is 26.03.
Not surprising but this random number of 20 is bullshit. BMI is always represented as a range of numbers, not a single point. Healthy BMI is not 20, healthy BMI is from 18.5 to 24.9. Already ‘obese’ Chloe has gone from being *gasp* over six points off the healthy mark, to just past one. The healthy range for a person of 5′ 10″ actually varies by forty-four pounds, quite a gap, 129 lbs to 173 lbs. If Chloe’s BMI calculations are correct she is approximately 181 lbs or a ‘whopping’ eight pounds overweight.
Unfortunately for poor Grenfell, to be ‘obese’ Chloe would need to weigh in at 209, or twenty-eight pounds heavier than she currently is.
The much-vaunted size zero of catwalk models is actually a UK size four. How many girls do you know that size?
This comment is officially the stupidest of the bunch. First of all, models, like any group of women can vary, they can be twos or fours or even sixes and still get the chance to sashay down the catwalk. Popular models such as Tyra Banks or Gisele Bündchen fall into this range, Tyra is an NA 2 (or the UK 4) and Gisele is about a 4 (UK 6) according to IMDB. Famous British model Kate Moss however would be a size zero stateside (UK 2). But this brings me to my other issue. See I do know girls who are fours and twos and zeros, even the so-called double zeros, but none of them are the 5′ 7″ that Kate Moss is let alone the 5′ 10″ that Tyra and Gisele are. Most are hovering around the 5 foot mark. The tallest person I know at the size zero or two mark is about 5′ 5″, and to be honest, a lot of people claim that she is anorexic, though she just happens to be blessed with a high metabolism and some nicotine. So to add another five inches of height to that, well, sorry but that is someone who is skinny.
Not to say that they are unhealthy though. They just have a smaller waist in proportion to their body than the rest of the population. That’s why they get paid the big bucks, because the average female is just not shaped like that.
As I said before, no the girl is not the picture of perfect health but neither is she one step away from a quadruple coronary bypass and to say so, while giving half truths to support your point, is just plain shameful.
