Gimme Shelter
Public transportation is a little dubious even under the best of circumstances. The crazies, the drunks and the interesting plethora of new smells tends to top my list of not so fun things on the subway
To be quite honest we Torontonians put up with quite a lot. Sub par service and consistently raising rates and taxes, I don’t complain nearly as much as I could but there’s always something that is bound to rankle my feathers.
Recently the Toronto Transit Commission has been working on some shelters for bus and streetcar routes near my residence. I should be happy right? If I’m waiting for a bus I now have a little place to escape from the rain, wind and endless feet of snow that has been dumped on us so far this winter. Unfortunately these new shelters provide as much protection as Paris Hilton and Britney Spears provide us from their crotches.
First of all these new shelters have just one wall, one. Which would be absolutely fantastic if, you know the wind only ever came from one direction. Toronto, however is built like any other big city, row upon row of major streets with very tall buildings creating a nice little funnel of wind to go tearing down upon unsuspecting pedestrians on blustery days. Exact situations to which these shelters are absolutely useless to.
Of course they also have a roof, placed at a jaunty angle just like a fucking beret. I assume it was to make sure that rain ran off of them smoothly. Leaving the poor sap waiting for a behind schedule bus clinging to the wall to prevent getting wet, but still getting soaked anyways. It’s just really sad to see all the money spent for a solution that’s just as useful as having spent no money at all.

lol, yeah Calgary has those too. Only really useful for lighting a cigarette or maybe leaning against if it’s been one of those nights. Mostly they’re just used as gigantic advertisements.
