Canada…it’s Dangerous
A little article caught my eye on Yahoo today. Basically it summed up that the Australian government has advised its citizens to exercise caution when visiting Canada for various reasons, one of them was terrorism. The article tried to say the it was some kind of surprise the South Korea was rated safer than Canada. I suppose everything with the word “Korea” in it is now supposed to be big and scary. South Korea is quite a nice little country though despite their big, bad neighbours to the north. My uncle actually spent several year teaching there, but I digress.
Since the Australian government said to exercise caution against terrorism in a country that has had no terrorist attacks, I wanted to see how they rated nations like the UK and the US who have actually had terrorist attacks. Interestingly they were rated the same. So apparently 0 people dying of terrorism, 52 people dying of terrorism and 2,974 people dying of terrorism (Canada, United Kingdom, and United States respectively) are all about equal to the Australian government. Fascinating. Sorry but Canada is winning for country you are least likely to get blown up in during the past ten years, I think we should get a little credit for that. The closest thing we’ve come to an “attack” was an art student trying to stir up shit in front of the Royal Ontario Museum. Meanwhile the UK had someone run a vehicle into an airport.
Other things stuck me as funny though. Tornadoes for example, Canada get this whole blurb on what to do if there is a tornado and the United States gets a, “yeah they happen” with no information about who to contact or what to do. Even though the US probably gets 10 times the amount of tornadoes Canada does.
This really cracked me up.
Bush and forest fires can occur any time in Canada. You should consult local news reports and authorities before visiting forested areas and follow the advice of local authorities.
Yes please consult the authorities, I picturing some one calling up the local police department asking about forest fires, what an aneurysm that officer answering the phone would have. Unless you are in that specific area, the police aren’t going to know and by that time it would probably be evident by the gigantic plumes of smoke. Contacting the National Forest Service would be a far better bet, here’s a lovely little tool for seeing current forest fire activity in Canada. As of today there would be none because although it is factually true that fires can occur at any time it’s still so extremely rare in the winter.
Then of course you have to worry about tsunamis, of course the last tsunami in Canada was 1964, but hey you must be ever vigilant.
I just wonder what Australia would rate itself on its little list, I can’t imagine it’s any safer than Canada. Well I’m willing to bet it has fewer ice related road accidents, but hey they have lots of poisonous critters.
