You’re The Expert

I’m sure many people have been through it before, you have an interest in a particular subject, maybe it’s your job or chosen educational career. Whether it be botany or nuclear physics, it happens. All of a sudden your friends and family have to decided to label you the “expert”.

Which in itself can be very flattering, but of course it never ends there. Now you are called upon for answers to any questions that could be remotely related. You happen to be hoping to get into vet school and suddenly everyone you’ve ever know and their second cousin is coming to you to diagnose their budgie’s cough.

I feel sorry for my boyfriend, I started dating a tech geek who happens to fix computers for a living and now he’s my family official electronic go-to and fixer.

My problem however is Photoshop. See I’ve been using graphic editing software for as long as I can remember, and using Photoshop for most of that time. So slowly I became the picture cropper and re-sizer, not a big deal, it’s easy and quick. No, my real problems started when I took one year of a graphic design course. Now I was someone who could “edit” photos, even though, there very little actually added to my skill set as far as Photoshop goes.

Which leads me to the predicament I find myself in now. Apparently I was supposed to have the 150 or so images my mother handed to me last month completely edited by now. You know in all that spare time I have between going to school full time and working. Of course these photos aren’t much of the quick colour correct variety. Most are of my grandparents, growing up, getting married, etc., a lot of them need much more serious work. Scratches, tears, stains, fading, it’s a damn roll call list.

So right now I’m the failed “expert” by not getting it done on-time. Of course to make it all better, I can’t find one of the damn discs the pictures were on.

  1. I feel your pain. I have been the family’s computer expert for so long I know what it is like. As for those old photos, the scratches add character. Some quick color balancing and some minor fix ups, a full-time job, a ton overtime, 5 pets my children “had” to have…scan, fix, process, print, pickup, glue and comment…phew. All done, while fixing the computer problems at the same time.
